LIMBO is a creative research collaboration between Framer Framed, Refugee Academy, Alaa Ammar for psychological first aid and (queer/refugee/migrant) community organizers & artists. Creative workshops are given by: Maha Youssef, Rochita Loenen-Ruiz, Lamin Barrow, Parisa Akbarzadehpoladi, Jerrold Saija, Mala Badi & Sarah Naqvi. The opening event is organised by Mama Kil representing Sehaq Queer Refugees Group.
In collaboration we aim to co-create meaningful knowledge on the challenges and resilience of queer refugees and the role of community engaged scholarship. Fabian Holle (PhD researcher) and Noa Bawits (Master student Sociology and education at Framer Framed) are researching how community engaged scholarship can be mutually beneficial in terms of knowledge and resources for those involved (the queer refugee community, the art institution, academia, community organizers and artists). During the workshops, Alaa Ammar is present to provide (psychological) first aid, and social support. Alaa also contributes in making connections between mental health, social health and art practices. Collectively we work to make the space a safer environment. The idea is to present (some of) the creative works at the end. Participants will decide if and what they want to present in an exhibition that will be collaboratively put together. Participants may choose whether they would like to present their works with their (artistic) name, without their name or with a pseudonym. On March 27, the exhibition will be opened for the public with an event, and stay on display until May 8, 2022.
In addition, participants are welcome on Wednesdays between 12:00h and 17:00h in the same period to work further or to just hangout. However, there won’t be any activities planned on Wednesdays. Fabian and Noa will be (mostly) present on Wednesdays working on this project or related projects.
At some point, Fabian and/or Noa will ask participants to engage in an interview about creativity, queerness, refugeeness, experiences within this project or similar engagements with Dutch institutions, and life in the Netherlands. These interviews will inform Noa’s master thesis and Fabian’s PhD research on the role of community engaged scholarship in the lives of queer refugees in the Netherlands. We aim to take the co-creative aspect of this project serious, so we are hoping that participants will share their ideas, visions and concerns with us at any time, also outside of the interview!
If you are queer and have a refugee background, you can participate in any workshop for free. Every Sunday from January 30th until March 27th at Framer Framed. Please contact Fabian Holle on Facebook, Instagram or via e-mail (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) for information and sign up.
